I am a proud wife of my husband Mitch and mother of my daughter Abigail, which we lovingly call "Team Wheeler."
I am an expert nurse who prioritizes caring for patients as if each person is an extension of family
The greatest joy of my life is fulfilling my responsibility to advance the profession of nursing
Philosophy of Teaching
I am a Registered Nurse of 28 years. I began my career in the Women and Children specialty unit focusing on Pediatrics for 15 years prior to obtaining an Associate Professor position in academia. Throughout my career, I have developed expertise in healthcare and educational technology and designed web-based learning tools for faculty and student learners. I have expertise in programming LMS platforms like Moodle, Blackboard, and Canvas. I have advanced curriculum design and implementation skills, overseeing the systematic evaluation plan as chairperson of a CNEA-accredited nursing program. I have extensive student academic advising experience as a lead member of the college admissions committee for the AAS-N program. I am a published reviewer of textbooks from various publishing houses. I have authored a study guide through Top Hat OER to augment student learning in the classroom for enhanced active participation. I mentor graduate students enrolled in various university programs and am a community advisory committee member in my city. I am an expert clinical coordinator for nursing students creating community service and experiential learning activities and implementing programs to address the diverse social determinants of health needs for children in our community.
Learning is more obtainable when students have an excellent instructor. I have 15 years of experience teaching in the classroom and online formats, with eight years as an Adjunct Faculty in the clinical setting. Active participation is my priority in fun and stress-free environments where diversity is honored, and learning is achieved.
No matter the format for learning, I am a visionary curriculum designer with expert skills in leveling online or didactic content to desired outcomes for any learner. I have advanced knowledge in using these skills to achieve national accreditation outcomes to meet or exceed program compliance and systematic evaluation goals.
My mission is to embrace the pursuit of excellence both inside and outside the classroom. I am talented in strategically combining national initiatives with community services to address Social Determinants of Health in real and meaningful ways that give back to the diverse populations we serve.
Special thanks to Jen Wheeler for going above and beyond to support her colleagues in the nursing department during the transition to fully online this term. As one of her colleagues noted, “Jen has SAVED many of us in developing alternative clinical assignments,” and another colleague raved, "Jen has shared her technological resources with our whole department while also coming up with guidance documents for staff and students to assist us within these times.” Thanks, Jen!
Professor Wheeler is my favorite professor of all time. She has an air of seriousness and knowledge that demands respect, coupled with sincere kindness, encouragement, and love. Her feedback on assignments is incredibly in-depth, more so than I've ever experienced. Reading them always made me and my friends feel better because of how incredibly sweet she is. She's the kind of professor that makes you try your absolute best because you would hate to let her down.
Jen provides a supportive environment and makes herself available for any questions or concerns. She is knowledgeable in the content and always clarifies any confusion. I also enjoy the hybrid set up with mostly online content but meeting in person once a week to connect/ collaborate with the instructor and other students.
Top Hat was very helpful in learning, and I liked that there were questions incorporated in it because they helped me to make sure I understood the content, as well as resources and videos to look at to get an even better understanding. I also feel that the PowerPoints were also very helpful.
This is an example of how I creatively connected with my learners using technology tools in new ways to inspire them to review course materials.
